KENYA: President Ruto Fires Ministers After Anti-Tax Protests

By Adama Makasuba

President William Ruto of Kenya has taken the unprecedented step of dismissing all his ministers and the attorney-general immediately in the wake of recent deadly protests and the withdrawal of an unpopular tax bill. The decision to dissolve the cabinet comes after careful reflection, listening to Kenyans’ concerns, and a comprehensive evaluation of his administration. President Ruto intends to form a new government through widespread consultations.

Notably, the dissolution of the cabinet does not affect the deputy president or the prime cabinet secretary, who also serves as the foreign affairs minister. President Ruto has made a significant pledge to engage with various sectors and political groups, seeking input from both the public and private spheres. This move marks a significant development less than two years after President Ruto assumed office, and it’s a step towards a more inclusive governance.

The last time an entire cabinet was dissolved in Kenya was in 2005, following a referendum on a new constitution. President Ruto has faced mounting pressure from citizens demanding greater government accountability despite his decision to withdraw the contentious tax increases. Some protesters have even called for the president’s resignation.

In response to public outcry, President Ruto has taken a significant step. He recently announced austerity measures across government agencies, including a freeze on proposed pay raises for cabinet members and parliamentarians. These measures were introduced in the context of ongoing anti-tax demonstrations and demands for increased government transparency, showing the direct impact of public protests on government policies.
