Rached Ghannouchi, a key opposition leader and head of the Ennahda movement, was sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Tunisian court.

This sentence adds to several previous convictions amid ongoing legal challenges faced by many opposition figures since President Kais Saied took power.

Ghannouchi’s defense team criticized the trial as unfair, citing an inconsistent secret witness whose testimony was later retracted. Arrest warrants were also issued for other party members tried in absentia on serious charges, including terrorism-related offenses.

At 86 years old, Ghannouchi had previously served over 20 years in prison and had denied any political bias in the courts. At the same time, his lawyers argue that the government is targeting them unjustly.
