Defence Minister Njie Appointed as the New Foreign Affairs Minister

Sering Modou Njie replaces Dr. Mamadou Tangara as Gambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister after Tangara’s resignation for a new role at the African Union.

President Adama Barrow appointed Sering Modou Njie as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad on July 9, 2025, following Dr. Mamadou Tangara’s resignation for a position at the African Union.

Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow will temporarily manage the Ministry of Defence.

Njie, who holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in international relations, is a former officer in the Gambia Armed Forces and has served in diplomatic roles, including as Deputy Head of Mission in India and Turkey.

Dr. Tangara completed nearly eight years as Foreign Affairs Minister before his resignation.
