Guinea held a referendum on its constitution on Sunday, September 21, which could allow military leader Mamadi Doumbouya to run for president, a position he is currently barred from under existing laws.

Voter support in Conakry suggests backing the proposed changes. However, the military government has disbanded over 50 political parties and suspended key opposition groups, which critics label the referendum as a “masquerade” to legitimize the coup.

A turnout of at least 50 percent is necessary for the referendum to pass, with provisional results expected on September 22.
