The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been monitoring events following the arrest of 19 young people at PURA on August 22, 2025, during a petition attempt.
The NHRC condemned police actions, including the use of tear gas on August 25, and emphasized the need to uphold human rights at public gatherings.
They proposed amending Section 5 of the Public Order Act to a notification system instead of a permit requirement, recommended police training on human rights, and called for the government to enhance the right to assemble.
The NHRC also urged the dropping of charges against detainees and a review of the Public Order Act, while encouraging peaceful protests and respecting the rights of others.
