President Adama Barrow expressed optimism that the National Assembly will present the 2024 draft constitution for a referendum following a complex drafting process that commenced in 2018. This process encountered hurdles, including the rejection of an earlier draft concerning presidential term limits in 2020.

In his New Year address, Barrow underscored the significance of national unity and the need to transcend political divisions rooted in ethnicity and party affiliation. He affirmed that all constitutional obligations would be met and urged citizens to adhere to the law and embrace democratic values.

Despite the global challenges, he highlighted the progress made in The Gambia’s economic, social, and overall welfare over the past year, noting that the government’s policies have yielded positive results.
