US Appeals Court Rejects Plea Deal for Alleged Mastermind of September 11 Attacks

A U.S. appeals court has rejected a plea deal for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged 9/11 mastermind, complicating efforts to resolve his prosecution at Guantanamo Bay and deliver justice for victims’ families.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, known as the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, was captured in 2003 and taken to Guantanamo Bay.

A recent U.S. appeals court canceled a negotiated plea deal that would have allowed him to plead guilty and avoid the death penalty, which aimed to resolve the long-standing military prosecution against him.

The deal sought to provide answers to victims’ families but was ultimately rejected by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. A military judge supported the plea deal. Still, the appeals court ruled that Austin acted within his rights to cancel it, highlighting ongoing legal struggles to hold Mohammed accountable for the attacks.
