The Senegalese navy intercepted 201 West African migrants in Foundiougne, with 69 arrested on land and 132 on a wooden boat in the Saloum Delta.

The Atlantic Ocean crossing to Spain’s Canary Islands is becoming increasingly dangerous, with nearly 47,000 arrivals reported in 2024, up from almost 40,000 in 2023.

This route is one of the deadliest globally, and estimates suggest thousands have died this year. The migrants included people from various West African countries, with a growing number of women and children.

Migration attempts rise during winter, but risks persist year-round. Recent trends show an influx of migrants from countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Syria, and Afghanistan joining West Africans in the journey.
