U.S. President Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be moved in response to provocative statements from Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president and current deputy chairman of its Security Council.

Medvedev, known for his aggressive rhetoric since the Ukraine invasion, responded defiantly, suggesting Trump’s concerns indicated that Russia was on the right track.

This exchange occurred on Truth Social, which is banned in Russia. Trump expressed hope that tensions wouldn’t escalate, while sending special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine and warning of new sanctions if no progress is made.

Medvedev’s shift from a moderate reformer to a hardliner reflects his desire to align with Vladimir Putin and military leaders. He frequently attacks Western leaders and often dismisses U.S. demands.

The submarine repositioning highlights how personal rivalries and social media are influencing global relations, with upcoming deadlines for negotiations being crucial.
