In northwestern Nigeria, bandits in Zamfara State killed 33 hostages they had kidnapped in February, despite receiving a ransom of over $33,000.

Out of 51 villagers taken from Banga village, only 18 were released. Resident Altine Bawa stated, “They took our money and slaughtered the rest.”

The region faces ongoing issues with armed gangs that have evolved from herder-farmer conflicts into organized crime, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and lawlessness.

Local officials have confirmed some deaths, but not the total.
