The Gambia’s RISE Project is expanding the Nafa Cash Transfer Programme to include 16 additional districts, increasing the total to 36.

Currently, the program assists 16,966 households in the 20 poorest districts and aims to cover all rural areas, excluding only the Kombos, Banjul, and Kanifing Municipality for now. The expansion is set to begin in August 2025, with a third phase anticipated by March 2026.

Funded by a $92.71 million grant from the World Bank, the program focuses on enhancing human capital and encourages beneficiaries to use cash for basic needs and income-generating activities.

Officials report that the program has had a positive impact on household resilience. The Nafa Program is a vital element of the RISE Project, providing support for health, nutrition, financial literacy, and business management to eligible households in vulnerable regions, with a monthly stipend of D3,000.
