On July 22, 2025, Momodou Darboe, Director General of the Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency (GLMA), testified before the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee regarding GLMA’s management of livestock owned by former President Yahya Jammeh.

Established in 2008, GLMA took over Jammeh’s livestock following a 2017 High Court order.

Darboe noted that GLMA had been hindered by the absence of the actual court order and lacked the resources to manage animals across multiple locations.

He confirmed that GLMA began tagging and valuing the livestock in late 2017 but did not receive formal valuation reports from the government. Significant losses of livestock were reported, with inventory indicating a drop from 3,456 cattle in 2016 to thousands missing by late 2017.

The hearing raised concerns about poor record-keeping, inadequate response to court directives, and oversight failures that contributed to the loss of public assets.

The committee plans to continue its investigation by questioning other officials involved in managing Jammeh’s assets.

Colonel Michael Randrianirina became president after taking control amid protests, and a military committee will oversee governance for up to two years until new elections.
Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo is the new prime minister. The government faces challenges related to power and water shortages, as well as economic issues.
Rajoelina, who was impeached and is currently in exile, does not recognize the new government, and there are no updates on the protesters’ responses.
