The Chief Medical Director of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), Dr. Ammar Aljafari, has been sacked amid allegations of corruption within the hospital management. A few days ago, a heated exchange ensued between the chairman of the board of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, Dr Adama Sallah, and the deputy chief medical director, Dr Abubacarr Jagne.

In a recent interview with Freedom Radio, Dr. Sallah disclosed a complex web of corruption within the hospital. He alleged that unauthorized travel led to significant per diem expenses, improper procurement practices, and blatant corruption. These accusations were mainly aimed at the Deputy Chief Medical Director (DCMD), accused of colluding with senior hospital officials. Furthermore, Dr. Sallah stated that many of these wasteful activities occurred without proper consultation with the board.

In response to the allegations, the government swiftly initiated an audit to uncover the extent of corruption at the hospital. A panel of investigators has been appointed to conduct a thorough investigation. Before completing the panel’s work, the government took the decisive step of dismissing Dr. Aljafari, signaling its commitment to restoring the hospital’s reputation. Dr. Aljafari, who assumed the role of Chief Medical Director in August 2022, will be succeeded by Dr. Mustapha Bittaye, the current Director of Health Services. While the reasons for Dr. Aljafari’s dismissal have not been disclosed, he is recognized for implementing significant changes during his tenure.
