The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has signed an agreement with KoBold Metals, backed by billionaires Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, to explore mineral resources, particularly the Manono lithium deposit.

KoBold plans to invest over $1 billion, utilizing advanced technology for exploration and digitizing the DRC’s geological records. The company will seek exploration permits for more than 1,600 square kilometers by July 31, 2025.

While Congolese officials view this as a significant investment opportunity, concerns persist about potential foreign exploitation of the country’s natural resources without benefiting local communities.
