Gambian President Adama Barrow has praised his administration’s accomplishments, emphasizing what he views as “significant strides” in governance, economic growth, and national reconciliation since he took office in 2017.
During The Gambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Banjul, President Barrow asserted that his government remains dedicated to enhancing democracy and fostering economic resilience in the face of global challenges.
He pointed to the country’s ten-year National Development Plan (YIRIWAA) as a crucial initiative to improve infrastructure, food security, human capital, and social protection. He noted that the economy has shown resilience, with a growth rate of 5.8% for 2024, while headline inflation has decreased from 18% in 2023 to 10% in 2024. Furthermore, he indicated that forecasts suggest continued progress from 2025 onward.
The president urged greater national unity and self-reliance, highlighting the importance of local solutions to the country’s challenges. He explained that this year’s theme emphasizes confidence, self-sufficiency, and decisive action, underlining the necessity for bold reforms in institutions and governance to ensure effective service delivery.
Barrow acknowledged the contributions of Gambians at home and abroad but cautioned that additional efforts are required to accelerate development. He stated that resilience and shared determination are vital for positioning The Gambia as a competitive player in the global economy, emphasizing that the country must be self-reliant, resilient, and inclusive for all.
