The floods in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province have killed at least 78 people. Rescue efforts are struggling due to a lack of resources. Heavy rain caused a river to overflow, affecting Mthatha and nearby areas while many people slept.
Premier Oscar Mabuyane stated that the region lacks sufficient rescue resources, including helicopters and specialist divers. Rescue teams are still working, and some people are still missing, including four high school students who were swept away in a flooded bus.
An extreme cold front triggered the floods and caused damage to infrastructure, schools, and health facilities. President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to visit the affected areas, while some political parties are criticizing the government for not providing sufficient assistance to the region.
