The Standard newspaper awarded the Gambian of the Year title to philanthropist and businessman Alhaji Abubakary Jawara, recognizing his significant contributions to The Gambia over the past year.
Jawara, the CEO of Gach Global, expressed profound gratitude during his emotional acceptance speech, stating this award is the most cherished among his numerous accolades. He dedicated the award to his elder brothers and emphasized his commitment to philanthropy.
Deputy speaker Seedy Njie highlighted Jawara’s charitable efforts beyond The Gambia, mentioning his contributions to sectors such as health and education in countries like Tunisia, Senegal, and Kenya. Jawara’s daughter and other family members praised his legacy and impact.
The Standard’s citation recognized him not only as a successful businessman with international ventures but also for his exceptional philanthropic work in response to the high cost of living during post-Covid times. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the information minister, presented the award following last year’s recipient, Yankuba Darboe.
