Col. Michael Randrianirina was inaugurated as Madagascar’s president after a military coup following three weeks of protests former President Andry Rajoelina.

He vowed to uphold the constitution and create a new governance system. The coup has faced condemnation from the United Nations and resulted in Madagascar’s suspension from the African Union.

A military council will govern for 18 months to two years until new elections are held. Young protesters are hopeful for positive changes addressing issues like power outages, high living costs, and corruption.
