On September 8, in Uvira, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds protested the appointment of General Olivier Gasita Mukunda as deputy commander of the 33rd military region on September 8, accusing him of collaborating with M23 rebels during their February takeover of Bukavu.

Initially peaceful, the protest escalated when police fired warning shots, leading to chaos with reports of at least four deaths and several injuries. The FARDC (Congolese Army) called for calm and expressed support for Gasita amidst the unrest.
