Mario Contopoulos is an MSc Business Analytics student at Esade Business School. He worked with Gambian bird researcher Lamin Jobaate to test water salinity in the Gambia River.

This project aimed to help people in Sankandi identify the best locations for planting mangrove trees, which are crucial for both nature and local livelihoods.

As part of the ROOTS initiative, they created low-cost, DIY salinity measurement kits and trained local students to use them. The project revealed unexpectedly high salinity levels, which necessitated changes to their equipment.

It also emphasized the importance of involving the community and learning through hands-on experience. The goal is to make Sankandi a center for mangrove restoration in The Gambia, helping local communities enhance their reforestation efforts and care for their environment.
