Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist of Ugandan descent, won the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo.
His campaign focused on the cost of living and inspired young and progressive voters. Mamdani has been a member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, representing a new wave of progressive Democrats.
His victory underscores a divide in the Democratic Party, as voters moved away from the moderate Cuomo, who faced controversies over sexual harassment.
If elected, Mamdani would become New York’s first Muslim and first Indian American mayor. He will compete against current mayor Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the November election.
