A South African court has halted the burial of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on June 25, following a request from the Zambian government to return his body for a state funeral in Lusaka.
Lungu’s family wanted a private burial, but Zambian authorities insist he be buried at Embassy Park with full national honors.
This disagreement highlights the political tensions between Lungu and the current President, Hakainde Hichilema. The court has scheduled a hearing for August 4 to address the matter, pending the burial.
