In a decisive effort to combat the growing problem of cyberbullying, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has unveiled plans to create comprehensive policies to protect youth and promote a safer online environment.

The theme of this year’s Consumer Parliament, “Building Youth Resilience: Ensuring Fair Utility Services and Combating Cyberbullying,” emphasizes PURA’s dedication to protecting consumers and showcases the essential role of youth in this endeavor, empowering them to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.

At the recent 8th edition of the Consumer Parliament, Dr. Njogou L. Bah, the director general of PURA, emphasized the dual nature of technology as both a powerful tool and a potential threat, particularly for young users. He highlighted the importance of creating effective policies and laws to combat the rising tide of digital harassment, which has become a pressing concern in today’s interconnected world.

Dr. Bah called for a collective effort among stakeholders, including government agencies and service providers, to engage in open dialogues that raise awareness and promote protective measures against cyberbullying, stressing the crucial role of their involvement in this initiative.

Alieu M. Ngum, the board chairman of PURA, reinforced the agency’s dedication to creating a clear roadmap to address consumer issues, particularly those affecting the youth. He acknowledged the rapid evolution of ICT and the accompanying risks of increased online interactions.

The initiative aims to cultivate a culture of respect and kindness in digital spaces, giving individuals the tools and awareness to stand against bullying. As PURA seeks to implement regulatory measures and educate the public on responsible digital usage, the authority is poised to ensure a safer online community for all.
