President Trump has announced the U.S. will withdraw from UNESCO, with the decision expected to take effect at the end of December 2026.
This marks the third withdrawal from the organization, with the U.S. previously leaving under both Reagan and Trump due to concerns over bias, particularly against Israel. The U.S. rejoined UNESCO in 2023 under President Biden after a five-year absence.
The Trump administration had previously indicated intentions to withdraw again, and in 2017, the U.S. left UNESCO citing anti-Israel bias after it admitted Palestine as a member in 2011.
