U.S. President Donald Trump praised Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai for his English during a White House meeting, which caused confusion and was viewed as condescending by some in Liberia.

Trump expressed surprise at Boakai’s language skills and inquired about his education. Although Boakai’s administration did not find the comments offensive, others in Liberia felt insulted.

The White House did not clarify if Trump was aware that English is Liberia’s official language. A senior adviser clarified that Trump’s remarks were intended as a compliment.
