Tom Saintfiet resigns as Gambia's senior team coach

By Adama Makasuba

Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet has resigned from his post following the team’s humiliating exit at the African Cup of Nations.

The seasoned 50-year-old coach from Belgium spearheaded Gambia’s triumphant first and second Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2021 and 2023, respectively, following his appointment in 2018. In a surprising turn, Saintfiet resigned, citing The Gambia as the finest country he has coached. This occurred after Gambia’s unfortunate elimination from the African Cup of Nations last night.

The Scorpions were eliminated in the tournament after losing 3-2 to Cameroon. They lost all three of their group games. Following the poor display of Gambia at the AFCON, the Belgian tactician was under pressure from pundits and fans alike.

Although facing criticism, his resignation surprised many who anticipated him to continue as coach. “Despite my contract running till August 2026, I have decided to step down as coach of the Gambia national team. However, I will always hold a special place in my heart for the Gambia and remain grateful to the country,” he expressed, reassuring his love and loyalty to the nation.

Last year, Sainfiet made history by leading Gambia to their first AFCON tournament in Cameroon. Gambia’s debut in the tournament was quite impressive, as they defeated Tunisia and Guinea in the group stages and advanced to the quarterfinals. This year, Sainfiet will once again lead the team to the AFCON tournament, which will be held in the Ivory Coast.

His defensive style of play was criticized by many fans who believed he was limiting the opportunities for the team to win. Sainfiet found the criticism offensive and blamed Gambian journalists for influencing others to criticize him.

The Gambia Football Federation expressed gratitude, saying, ” We sincerely appreciate you,” Gaffer. Your departure leaves a void as our nation bids farewell to an exceptional tactician. Your remarkable service of five and a half years led us to consecutive AFCON qualifications, a testament to your expertise. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
