The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) has called for calm between the communities of Gunjur and Berending in Kombo South as tensions over land disputes continue to escalate.
These neighboring communities have been embroiled in a long-standing land dispute that tragically culminated in a fatal incident in 2019, resulting in the loss of a man’s life over the contested area.
In the aftermath of this deadly conflict, the Gambian government established a task force to investigate the situation and provide recommendations. However, recent developments have seen residents of Berending holding a news conference to contest a proposed new boundary between the two villages, further heightening tensions.
In response, WANEP has urged both sides to dialogue, emphasizing that tension and aggression are never effective solutions. “We must work collaboratively to find peaceful and constructive ways to resolve our differences. We encourage members of both communities to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid any actions or statements that could escalate tensions further. We also appeal to our youth to refrain from engaging in actions that may lead to violence.
The group stated, ” We call on the government, civil society, local communities, and international partners to join WANEP and its partners in fostering dialogue and ensuring lasting peace in Gunjur and Berending. “
