The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines is pleased to inform the general public that the National Energy Compact was launched and formally endorsed on Wednesday, 24th September 2025, at the Mission 300 (M300) Africa Energy Summit in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The National Energy Compacts detail ambitious programmes by several African countries to increase the pace of electricity access by 2030. The Compact is a programme developed under the framework of M300, a joint initiative of the World Bank and the African Development Bank to provide electricity access to an additional 300 million people across Africa by 2030.
With its own goal of attaining universal electricity access by 2026, The Gambia has joined the M300 initiative and is working closely with partners to achieve this goal. The Compact provides a coordinated strategy across five key pillars: infrastructure expansion, regional integration, last-mile access, private sector participation, and financial sustainability.
It further outlines a pipeline of projects across generation, transmission, distribution, off-grid solutions, and clean cooking sub-sector. These projects are designed to achieve universal access, expand renewable energy capacity, and ensure the reliability and resilience of the power system.
The Compact calls for a total of US$552 million in financing from public and private funds, including multilateral and philanthropic organisations. Anchored on the electricity sub-sector roadmap, it represents a bold and transformative vision for The Gambia’s energy future. Its successful implementation will require strong political commitment, robust institutional frameworks, and sustained support from development partners and private investors.
The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines reaffirms its commitment to the Compact’s goals and calls on all stakeholders to join efforts in achieving universal electricity access, powering growth, and improving the lives of all Gambians.
