Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan took her oath in Dodoma after a controversial October 29 election that sparked violent protests and unrest, particularly in Dar es Salaam.

The exclusion of two leading opposition candidates contributed to the turmoil, with the main opposition party, Chadema, claiming the election was illegitimate. The military was involved, resulting in fatalities, but official statistics were not released.

Key regional leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony, and Kenya’s President Ruto called for peace. The unrest also led to the closure of the border with Kenya, affecting trade.
