The Society of Women in Taxation West Africa (SWITWA), with support from the ECOWAS Commission and the Gambia Revenue Authority, hosted a two-day event in The Gambia, focusing on empowering women in cross-border trade.

The gathering brought together policymakers and civil society leaders to address the challenges faced by women traders, who comprise over 70% of informal cross-border traders.

First Lady Fatoumatta Bah Barrow called for reforms to support women, while GRA Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe spoke about economic obstacles.

SWITWA Chairperson Esi Suma Sam encouraged participation in discussions to develop gender-responsive solutions. Established in 2010, SWITWA advocates for women’s issues in taxation and gender-responsive tax policies in the region.
