The Gambia National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) held a workshop on May 20, 2025, to discuss the role of minority languages in the new National Language Policy.

This workshop, supported by the African Union’s Academy of Languages (ACALAN), aimed to explore what people expect from the policy, the contributions of minority languages, and the challenges associated with them.

NCAC Director General Hassoum Ceesay emphasized the need for a policy that incorporates The Gambia’s diverse languages and promotes the national languages, which are currently underutilized.

Since 2023, the initiative has included various activities, such as awareness campaigns and creative projects. Mr. Nana Grey-Johnson from the University of The Gambia praised the workshop’s importance for the country’s cultural development.
