Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne has requested an investigation into political violence from 2021 to 2024, which resulted in at least 80 deaths and numerous injuries.
Ibrahima Ndoye, the Prosecutor in Dakar, will lead the investigation to identify those responsible, including civilians, law enforcement, and political leaders.
Concerns over human rights violations have arisen, particularly regarding reported torture. A controversial amnesty law from former President Macky Sall’s administration had initially dampened hopes for justice, but legal experts affirm that this law cannot shield serious crimes like torture.
The investigation will commence with summons for victims of torture and families of the deceased as Senegal confronts its challenging recent history.
