The Trump administration has released over 240,000 pages of previously sealed documents detailing the FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr., which had been sealed since 1977.
This decision is part of a transparency initiative and follows the declassification of information related to the assassinations of JFK and RFK.
The King family expressed concern over the release, highlighting the personal impact of the surveillance on them. Surviving children Martin Luther King III and Bernice King called for careful consideration of the documents, which include records, reports, photographs, and an audio file.
While some civil rights organizations criticize the timing of the release, historians believe it could improve understanding of the civil rights movement and government actions against its leaders.
