Opposition leader Patrick Herminie won the presidential election in Seychelles with 52.7% of the vote against incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan.
Herminie, from the United Seychelles party, previously served as the speaker of the national assembly. The election followed an initial round without a majority winner, with both candidates addressing urgent issues like environmental degradation and drug addiction.
Recent public dissent was fueled by a controversial lease to a Qatari company for a luxury hotel, raising concerns over foreign influence on local communities. Seychelles faces significant challenges from climate change and a high rate of heroin addiction.
