Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga has accused Algeria of “international terrorism” following the shooting down of a Malian army drone that Algeria claimed was operating in its airspace.

He emphasized the partnership between Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger through their AES Confederation to combat terrorism, following their withdrawal from ECOWAS and their accession to the Rome Statute of the ICC.

Relations with Algeria have soured since the military coups in Mali, resulting in Mali bringing a case against Algeria at the International Court of Justice regarding the drone incident. At the same time, Mali’s junta is increasingly collaborating with Russia for security as conditions deteriorate due to insurgent attacks.
