The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) collaborates with an international research team comprising Essex, The Gambia, Sciences Po Paris, Oxford, and New York University to enhance waste management using Google Plus Codes. This initiative is part of the Kanifing Environmental Transformation Program (KETP) and aims to achieve a zero-waste municipality by improving local services, infrastructure, and environmental quality.

Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda underscored the pivotal role of community involvement and collaboration with partners. The pilot and evaluation phases are set for 2025-2026, with surveys planned for December 2024 and early 2026 to assess the project’s impact. Funded by the Fund for Innovation in Development, with a budget of 30 million Dalasi (11 million Dalasi for KMC activities), the initiative seeks to improve urban governance and can serve as a model for other cities.
