A surgical team at Kenyatta National Hospital performed a pioneering procedure called Transhumeral Targeted Sensory Reinnervation (TSR) on 22-year-old Moses Mwendwa, successfully restoring touch sensation to his amputated arm stump.
The surgery on April 29 involved reconnecting severed nerves to nearby skin. Mwendwa lost his arm due to a rare condition after an accident and described the surgery as bringing a part of him back. Led by Prof.
Ferdinand Nang’ole and Dr. Benjamin Wabwire represent a significant achievement in medical innovation in Africa, emphasizing the emotional and human aspects of the procedure.
