As Europe marks the 80th anniversary of its victory over fascism and World War II, Algeria commemorates the tragic anniversary of the May 8, 1945, massacres during its struggle for independence from French colonial rule.

Ceremonies in Guelma, Kherrata, and Setif honor the victims, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighting the significance of this event.

On that day, peaceful protests for independence were violently repressed by French forces, resulting in thousands of deaths. A proposed truth commission between Algeria and France has stalled amid strained relations, with historians emphasizing France’s lack of acknowledgment of its actions as mass murder. A group of French lawmakers attended the commemorations, reflecting ongoing efforts for remembrance and dialogue.
