A report by the NGO Access to Nutrition Initiative highlights that most packaged foods and drinks in Kenya do not comply with new government nutrition regulations requiring warning labels for high-sugar, high-fat, and high-sodium products.

This initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Health, aims to address the rising obesity crisis in Africa, where a significant portion of the population is expected to be overweight or obese by 2030.

WHO Regional Director Dr. Matshidiso Moeti stresses the urgency of this issue. The shift towards processed foods, influenced by urbanization and higher incomes, has worsened the problem, particularly as multinational companies offer less healthy options in low-income countries.

Additionally, Kenya has implemented a 4% tax on sugar to encourage healthier eating habits.
