The Gambia Transport Union (GTU) has responded to unauthorized fare increases by commercial drivers. They attribute these increases to structural and regulatory problems in the transportation sector. Main issues being:

1. Brikama has been the only official commercial garage since 1965.

2. There is no comprehensive legal framework in place to enforce industry rules.

3. The current fare structure is outdated and does not match the economic reality.

4. Transport operators face economic pressure from rising living costs.

The GTU is calling for reforms, including the creation of a National Transport Policy and a review of the Motor Traffic Act. They have distanced themselves from unauthorized fare increases, seeing them as signs of deeper issues.

“We are committed to establishing a level playing field for all and ensuring fair, safe, and affordable transportation services in The Gambia. We are also engaged in ongoing discussions with drivers, garage committees, and regional representatives to inform them about issues surrounding road commercial transport in The Gambia, particularly the official fare increment,” GTU said.
