Ghana’s President John Mahama launched the GOLDBOD Task Force to address illegal gold mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.” This issue was a significant concern during the last presidential election, leading to protests by the previous government.
The task force includes members from security agencies and has the authority to arrest suspects involved in illegal activities. It aims to collaborate with the Ghana Gold Board, established in January, to manage gold transactions and curb the black-market economy.
Mahama emphasized the need for decisive action against illegal practices while ensuring task force accountability using body cameras. Despite this initiative, experts’ express doubts about the effectiveness of previous efforts, highlighting that enforcement remains the key challenge.
