On July 23, 2025, the National Environment Agency (NEA) held a meeting in Fajara to discuss the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty, which aims to protect marine life beyond national borders.
The Gambia signed the treaty on September 20, 2023, and its ratification was approved by the Cabinet on July 10, 2025.
Executive Director Dawda Badjie emphasized the treaty’s importance for The Gambia’s fishing, tourism, and marine jobs, highlighting potential opportunities for developing countries.
Ndey Sireng Bakurin from TANGO emphasized the importance of community involvement in implementing the treaty.
The meeting brought together government representatives, civil society, academia, and development partners to align The Gambia’s goals with global ocean conservation efforts.
