On July 5, 2025, President Adama Barrow inaugurated the foundation stone for a $1 billion deep-sea port in Sanyang, developed through a Public-Private Partnership with the Turkish Albayrak Group.
The port, set to be constructed over six years in three phases, aims to enhance The Gambia’s port capacity and relieve congestion at the Port of Banjul without requiring direct government funding.
Key features include a deep access channel and modern cargo handling equipment. The project is expected to boost the economy, create hundreds of permanent jobs for Gambians, and include social amenities for the local community.
