Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O.A. Cham recently announced that the Gambian Armed Forces will cultivate rice on 42 hectares, with an anticipated yield of 250 to 300 tons in three weeks.

During a visit to the Sapu Rice Field, he underscored the military’s significant role in enhancing the nation’s food self-sufficiency in rice production. The armed forces plan to invest in new farming equipment and have submitted a project plan to the Central Bank for financial support.

CDS Cham envisions that The Gambia could cease rice imports within the next 10 to 15 years. This harvest represents the commencement of the initiative, and soldiers will also receive training in agricultural skills to equip them for careers after their military service. The overarching goal is to attain food independence for The Gambia.
