Ghana’s President John Mahama has decided on July 15 to remove fuel allowances for all political appointees. This move aims to cut costs and redirect public funds.

It impacts cabinet ministers and leaders of public institutions. The president believes that leaders should make sacrifices, just like the citizens they serve.

Since taking office in January after an economic crisis, Mahama has introduced several reforms. These include reducing the number of ministers and stopping satellite TV subscriptions for government offices.

The IMF has recognized Ghana’s progress in improving its economy and restructuring its debt.
