Constant Mutamba, the former justice minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years for allegedly embezzling nearly $20 million designated for a prison project in Kisangani.
Prosecutors are seeking a harsh sentence that includes hard labor and a 10-year disqualification from holding electoral office. At the same time, his defense argues that no funds were misappropriated and that he acted with good intentions.
Mutamba, recognized for his anti-corruption efforts and judicial reforms, is currently under examination by magistrates, with a verdict anticipated on August 27.
