On Monday, July 8, Kenya experienced its deadliest day of anti-government protests, with 31 fatalities, over 107 injuries, and more than 500 arrests.
The unrest, fueled by discontent over police brutality, poor governance, and calls for President William Ruto’s resignation due to corruption and rising living costs, has been ongoing for weeks.
U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Türk urged officials to tackle the root causes of the protests. The demonstrations coincided with the anniversary of the Saba Saba pro-democracy protests and were heightened by a blogger’s death in custody and a police shooting.
The Kenya National Cohesion and Integration Commission criticized the police for excessive force and called for political leaders to manage ethnic tensions.
Additionally, public dissatisfaction has grown due to Ruto’s tax increases aimed at managing government debt, which have impacted businesses amid the unrest.
