President Mahamat Deby of Chad announced this action just one day after the ban was signed. The US says the ban is meant to protect national security from foreign threats.

Other African countries affected by the ban are the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.

The African Union Commission warned that these travel restrictions could harm diplomatic relations and urged the US to adopt a more equitable approach.
