Bakary-K.-Badjie-2026-presidential-bid

By Adama Makasuba

Bakary K. Badjie, the National Assembly member representing Foni Bintang, has firmly rejected claims made by exiled former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh that he is a puppet of a European individual. This statement follows Badjie’s announcement of his intent to run for the presidency in the upcoming 2026 elections.

Having initially entered office as one of five independent lawmakers supporting Jammeh, Badjie was expelled by the former president for his presidential aspirations. Jammeh accused Badjie of acting independently and labeled him as “unpatriotic.”

In a dramatic audio recording of his announcement concerning Badjie’s expulsion, Jammeh alleged, “I know he has a white friend who made it clear that this guy would be the next president of The Gambia. A European said it.”

In response, Badjie vehemently denied Jammeh’s accusations, underscoring the necessity for a dynamic young Pan-African leader to advance the nation. “I categorically deny the assertion that I am a puppet for anyone. I am unaware of any European backing my presidential candidacy,” he stated. “The only path forward for this country is to elect a young Pan-African who embodies the energy and conviction to uphold his beliefs and will not be swayed by outside influences.”
