Accra City Authorities Intensify Efforts to Curb Roadside Trading

The central business district of Accra is currently facing a conflict between city authorities and roadside traders. These traders set up makeshift markets on sidewalks, obstructing pedestrian movement.

In response, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly have launched a collaborative decongestion initiative to remove unauthorized traders and their structures.

Many of the traders, predominantly women, express their frustration over the absence of alternative sources of income.

This situation highlights the tension between upholding law and order and safeguarding livelihoods. Officials recognize the challenges in enforcing past initiatives, but the success of this new effort is still uncertain.
